School Board Candidates
School Board Candidate Statements
Beryl Buchanan
Recent gains in Mountain Empire Unified School District’s state test scores and ratification of the teacher’s
contract confirm that district administrators have begun to implement policies to move our schools in a
positive direction.

As a school board member I would work to continue this trend with a goal of achieving a state distinguished
school award.  This could be accomplished by bringing together administrators, teachers and classified
staff in a unified effort to establish a “Better from Within” mentality to create respectful and responsible
students who will be ready for academic and economic success.

I would also like to focus on implementing meaningful incentives to improve attendance to allow for
increased state funding.  Even a small gain in attendance percentages would result in a significant increase
in state funding.  One of the uses of these funds could be offsetting the districts astronomical transportation
costs.  With one of the largest geographical areas in the state, Mountain Empire receives no additional
funding to compensate for the increased mileage on busses and vehicles.

My twenty years experience working with limited budgets will prove an asset to the board.

I have received the endorsement of Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny and respectfully request your vote.

My Agenda Focuses on
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT and EMPLOYEE WELFARE.  I look upon Taxpayers
as
CUSTOMERS TO BE SERVED.

I believe in a
BROAD BASED problem solving agenda, EMPOWERING PARENTS, TEACHERS AND
OTHER DISTRICT EMPLOYEES
.  I believe in meaningful, structured reform that enhances the opportunity
for
ALL STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS.  I believe that when we have to make hard decisions, it is
important that we make the right choice academically, rather than the easy choice politically or financially.
STUDENTS SHOULD COME BEFORE EVERY OTHER CONSIDERATION.

EDUCATION IS A COMMUNITY TRUST  NOT A POLITICAL OPPORTUNITY.

I have lived in Potrero since 1992.  Since then, I have been involved in the community  in many different
forms. I have coached Little League baseball. I have coached and refereed soccer for many years.  I’m also
Mountain Empires High School boy’s soccer coach.

I have been involved with the district in other capacities to include the Every 15 Minute program dealing with
teenage drinking. I have also been involved with schools within the Mountain Empire School district dealing
with law enforcement related issues.

My background  in the community consists of collecting information about social and criminal related
problems.  I use this collected information to make decisions to resolve problems.

I have four children some of which have graduated from Mountain Empire High School.  Three of my oldest
sons are graduates of  Mountain Empire High School and are currently serving in the military or attending
college. I still have one child attending Mountain Empire High School and have an interest in school
operations and policy.

I’m asking for your vote for School Board of Trustees.
